The Palest Light was six editions of performance series curated by Pepa Ubera 2013 and 2016. The first five events took place at TripSpace Projects in East London, with the final edition presented at Sadler’s Wells’ Wild Card series in March 2016. Emerging from Ubera’s immersion in East London's independent art scene, the series brought together experimental choreography, video art, live performance, sound, and poetry. It explored choreography as an expanded practice - not limited to dance, but understood as a way of organising attention, space, bodies, and relationships. Each event offered an immersive experience shaped around a specific curatorial theme, with an emphasis on poetic thinking, collective imagination, and the political and relational potential of performance. Curated Themes Eco-Somatic Environment: An invitation into a transformed space - plants and trees were brought into the room to reimagine the performance environment. This edition proposed a choreography of atmosphere, where the sensory experience of nature, space, and stillness shaped the conditions of attention. Gender & Performativity: Artists explored how gender is enacted and embodied. Works challenged normative representations and questioned the relationship between identity and physical expression. Social Choreography: Focused on the social structures choreography can both reflect and reshape. This edition examined participation, co-creation, and the political implications of shared movement. Social Change: A politically responsive edition that framed performance as a space for resistance, care, and imagining alternative futures. Artists addressed the urgency of transformation through embodied practices. Witnessing Others: A quiet, reflective evening exploring the politics of observation and the role of presence. Intimacy, silence, and attention were central tools for shifting how we witness and are witnessed. Ideas of Togetherness: Presented as part of Sadler’s Wells’ Wild Card series in 2016, this final iteration was a curated get-together - an opportunity to encounter artists whose idea of choreography expands across mediums and experiences. The programme included work by thought-provoking French choreographer Alice Chauchat, among others. The evening invited audiences into an evocative landscape of sound, movement, and interaction, where choreography acted as a form of gathering, reflection, and exchange. Artists (2013-2016): Rosalie Wahlfrid, Keith Lim, Deniz Unal, Lovelace, Antje Hildebrandt, Hart and Hader, Laura Doelher, Anastasia Freygang, Pepa Ubera, Josefina Camus, Fernanda Muñoz-Newson, Jamila Johnson Small, Mira Kautto, Simone Salvatici, Bruno Humberto, Serena Lee, Louise Orwin, Alice Tatge & Pepa Ubera, Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome with Rosalie Wahlfrid, Charlotte Ashwell, Tania Soubry and Nuno Brito, Charlie Hope & Soren Vinson, Maria Sideri and Mona Mock, Nicolas Kasinos, Azahara Ubera, Polbrone, Joss Carter and Marco Florio. The first five editions were produced at and with the TripSpace team Giuliana Majo and Montserrat Ventura, with sound engineering by Michael Picknett. The Palest Light 6 at Sadler’s Wells was produced in collaboration with Nikki Tomlinson and Robyn Cabaret, and was presented at the invitation of curator Eva Martinez.
